Mother's Day 2008 will be celebrated on Sunday, May 11. This is a perfect opportunity to share some special time with the woman in your life.

Mother's Day is a day set aside to honor women. This year, the holiday will be celebrated on Sunday, May 11. Each year you work hard to come up with a special gift to show your wife, mom or grandmother how much you love and appreciate her. Flowers, candy and jewelry are pretty common gifts; but most women are happy with any gift or sentiment because they appreciate the thought behind it.

The truth is however, if given the choice; most women would choose to spend time with their loved ones in lieu of a fancy gift. This is especially true for older mothers whose children are busy with their own families. Additionally, many adult children live away from their moms and don't see them as often as they'd like. Consequently, Mother's Day is a perfect time to spend the day together.

Here are some creative suggestions for things you and the special woman in your life can do together to celebrate Mother's Day.

  1. Arts & Crafts - If your wife or mom is artistic and crafty, a day together doing crafts will be something she will never forget. Many cities have paint-your-own-pottery studios. This is a fun craft for all ages. You begin by choosing your piece for painting. Options may include an item as simple as a coffee mug or saucer, or a more extravagant item such as a lamp or vase. Once you select your piece, you can then decorate it. The studio provides the paints, stamps and stencils as well as instructions and techniques. The finished product is then glazed and fired by the studio and is available for pick up within a week.
  2. Wine Tasting - Most vineyards and wine schools offer a time for the public to come in and sample their wines. Take mom for a day of wine tasting, or join with her in a wine tasting class. In fact, many wineries offer special events for Mother's Day. Call around your area for hours and information.
  3. Cooking/Culinary Arts Class - Colleges, cooking schools and community centers offer cooking classes. Many of these are one day, or one evening events. Some are more for adults only (like French or Italian cooking); while others may be for the entire family (like making a gingerbread house). If you can't find a class that you want, check with a chef or great cook in the specialty that your mom (or wife) might want to learn. You can arrange a private lesson for the two of you.
  4. Home Improvement - Many women are homeowners who live alone. This may mean that minor repairs around the house go undone. And, if the kids live out of town or work during the week, this is especially true because they are not always available to make the repairs. If this is your situation, Mother's Day is a wonderful opportunity to spend the day working around your mom's house. You can tighten door handles, touch up paint, fix minor leaks and clean up the yard. Mom will really appreciate the help. If you're really handy, you might lay a floor, install a new sink or do some landscaping for her.

Some other ideas might include going dancing, a boat cruise/tour or day at the spa.
