Pumpkins show up on tabletops all season long in decorations, centerpieces and place settings.
When it comes to getting on the table for autumn meals and parties, pumpkins aren’t only good for pies. They are also perfect for decorating fall tabletops. Whether getting ready for everyday dinner or playing host for a holiday gathering, decorating a fall table with pumpkins reinforces the festive mood and co-ordinates well with seasonal dishes. Before you start decorating a table with pumpkins, decide what kind of look you’re after. Do you want formal or casual, traditional or whimsical? The state of your furniture pieces and overall design preferences may help you decide which way to go. Use these tips for suggestions:
Choose from one of these looks or create your own, then adapt the following table decorating ideas to fit your style. They will look equally appealing with either orange or white pumpkins. A Table Runner with PumpkinsThe starting point for setting any table is the linens. Whether you have a tablecloth or bare surface, a runner adds instant character. Instead of a fabric table runner, create one using pumpkins. Using medium-sized gourds, simply arrange them in a straight line down the length of the table. Scattering a bundle of mini pumpkins gives a less structured look. A Perfect Pumpkin CenterpieceThis easy fall centerpiece starts with a cake stand. Place on it one pumpkin slightly smaller than the diameter of the stand. Surround the base of the pumpkin with dried berries or the blooms of fall flowers. If you have one, a black cake pedestal provides a striking contrast to both orange and white pumpkins. Using Pumpkins in Place SettingsTable settings for fall practically beg for a pumpkin place card holder. Cut a small slit in the tops of mini pumpkins and insert cards with the names of guests. For a little extra style, use stencils or carve out a design on the front of each one. This could be a jack-o-lantern face or each guest’s monogram for a touch of formality. When completed, put the pumpkins in the center of each plate. Keep in mind that the pumpkins you use don’t have to be the real thing. Many stores, from Target to local crafts shops, sell faux pumpkins in a variety of styles for a decent price. Faux may be the way to go for a table runner and wreath, but a real pumpkin on a plain cake stand makes for a stunningly simple centerpiece.
