Easy Comic Book Costumes

Robin, The Hulk, and Superboy

Oct 27, 2009 Robert Becka

Comic book characters are amongst the most common Halloween costumes. Here are few cheap and easy ideas for this year!

Batman's had several sidekicks over the years, and with the success of the recent movies, Batman costumes are everywhere. Ever hero needs a sidekick, but not every sidekick has a lot of money, time, or sewing ability. Here's what's needed for the answer, and most of it is available at any local second-hand store.

Robin from DC Comics (Pictured)

  • Red t-shirt (sleeveless or not)
  • Green t-shirt
  • Green booty shorts/women's underwear/pants
  • Green dish-washing gloves
  • Yellow dress shirt
  • Black or green eye mask
  • Yellow and black construction paper/tape/fabric/whatever
  • Some sort of adhesive
  • Green socks

Cut off the sleeves of the red t-shirt and wear it over the green one. Cut three or more strips out of the yellow construction paper (or fabric or whatever is handy... the picture shows thee plastic strips with yellow tape on them) and glue/sew them onto the front of the shirt.

Then make a black circle and a yellow "R" and secure them to the left breast of the shirt the same way (right breast if you're looking at the front of the shirt).

Anyone not comfortable with the booty shorts look can substitute green pants (or for girls, a green skirt), or find some tights to wear underneath the booty shorts.

For the cape, just button the top button of the yellow, tuck in the sleeves, and then sew/pin the front parts of the shirt over the shoulder for the classic pulled-back cape look (pictured).

Cut a slit in the bottom of the green socks and pull them over whatever pair of shoes are most comfortable.

The Hulk from Marvel Comics

A classic costume, and ridiculously easy to do.

  • Green body paint
  • Green hair spray
  • Old clothes

Just rip up the old clothes (the classic image of the Hulk shows a white dress shirt and purple dress pants, but unfortunately, purple dress pants aren't common in most men's closests) and slather on the body paint and hair spray. If expecting to be outside on a cold Halloween night, get a long sleeve green shirt and a pair of green tights or pantyhose to wear underneath the ripped clothes to help stay warm.

Superboy from DC Comics

Superboy's gone through several costume changes over the years, but the most recent attempt to make him look like a normal kid makes a Superboy costume perhaps the easiest of all.

  • Black t-shirt
  • Red spray/fabric paint
  • jeans
  • black dress shoes or boots

Today's Superboy wears a tucked-in black t-shirt with the "S" shield on it. That's it. Paint on an "S" in stylistic super-fashion and Superboy is alive and kicking butt. If going extra-authentic, Superboy sports short-cropped black hair and occassionaly wears a black leather wristband. Black "S" logo t-shirts are also on sale for those with a few bucks to spare.

And there it is; three easy costumes that cost little to no money. Now dig through those closests and dressers and get costuming!
