Millions of Americans will drive to parks or parking lots close to a fireworks show to watch for free. So why not a tailgate party?

When July 4th rolls around, celebration is in the summer air. Friends and families get together and once the sun starts to set, they head off to watch a fireworks display. A tailgate party is the perfect Fourth of July party!

Start the Fourth of July Fireworks Early!

By the whole gang meeting a few hours ahead of the fireworks show for a tailgate, there are advantages.

  • No one person has the cost of throwing a party
  • The group won’t have to travel to the fireworks spot, they’ll be there!
  • No fighting the traffic or hunting for a place to park.
  • When the fireworks show is done, so is the party!

Fourth of July Tailgate Party Décorating Fun

Get creative for this event. See who can show up in the most patriotic vehicle! Imagine a group of vehicles parked together watching fireworks all decked out in red, white and blue! Sky is the limit as to how the vehicles can be adorned from American flags flying off antennas to Decotora, a pop-culture thing in Japan which means “decorated trucks”.

If everyone dresses in their loudest patriotic colored clothes the Fourth of July tailgate party will be festive just by their presence! Adding Uncle Sam hats or neon glow necklaces, glasses and bracelets will ante up the spirit!

Food for an Independence Day Tailgate

The food for a Fourth of July tailgate party should be simple but tasty, just like a pot luck or picnic. Cover tailgates with fun tablecloths that reflects the 4th of July festive mood and serve off colorful paper plates. Make it a potluck with each tailgater bringing one or two menu items to be shared with everyone such as:

  • Cold fried chicken
  • Roll ups (sliced turkey, diced cucumbers and cream cheese in lettuce leaves or tortillas)
  • Sandwich triangles with Crunchy Chicken Salad filling
  • Favorite casserole dishes (check out Campbell's Casserole Kitchen)
  • Overnight or pasta salad
  • Cool Cucumber Salad
  • Melon balls
  • Celery and carrot sticks
  • Red, white and blue decorated cupcakes arranged into a flag inside the carrying container
  • Bring an ingloo cooler full of iced tea or lemonade, or load up the cooler with iced pop and plenty of water so no one get dehydrated.

Party to Patriotic Music!

What would a 4th of July party be without patriotic music? There are lots of songs that celebrate the joys of living in the U.S.! Bring a collection of CDs with songs by Toby Keith, Lee Greenwood, or even Chuck Berry and play them loud and proud!

By tailgating this Fourth of July, everyone can have fun and enjoy the show without spending a bundle or going to a lot of trouble. Just remember no alcohol in public, bag up the trash, and no redneck riders in the back of the truck going home!
