Environmentally-Conscious Costumes for Adults and Children

Oct 10, 2009 Tamiko Nicholson

Want to have a green theme for a Halloween costume this year? Read on for some fun and environmentally-conscious outfits for October 31st.

Going green can easily be part of Halloween. Here are some easy and quick costume ideas with the environment and recycling in mind.

Send a Green Message as the Halloween Garbage Ghost

Dress up as the Ghost of the Thrown Away Wrappers. Before Halloween, ask friends and family to save the wrappers and boxes from candy and chocolates (or save the wrappers from this Halloween for next year) . Then use liquid stitch glue or thick thread and a needle to attach the candy garbage to an old pair of pants and top.

Stitch together candy wrappings into a circle that can go around the head and make sure there are a lot of crinkly wrappings to go around the wrist. The person who dresses up like this can go around saying, in a scary voice of course, “Throw away your Halloween garbage in the garbage can or you will end up like me!!!!”

Go as a Green Fairy

Make fairy wings using wire hangers and plastic bags or cut them out of a recycled box and paint them green. Attach the wings around the person’s arms by using fabric elastic, ribbon or string. Make the wand out of a rolled up piece of newspaper and cut out two stars from a recycled box to glue or staple at the end. Leave them as is, or paint the wand green and gold. Wear traditional fairy garb in green, check out a secondhand store to pick out the outfit to be a true green fairy.

The Fairy can go around saying, “I am the Recycling Fairy, here to say that good things will come your way if you remember to recycle. Have you recycled today?” For those who say yes, the fairy can use the wand to anoint people for being good recyclers. If a person says no, the fairy can go ahead and share some good recycling tips.

Go as an Official Recyling Officer

Get a police officer costume or wear a green military outfit, ideally pick it up from a second hand shop. Then make a badge, out of recycled paper of course, that says Official Recycling Officer. Another idea is to make a green sash that says Official Recycling Officer to wear across the body. Then carry candy, a green pad of recycled paper and a pen or pencil made of recycled materials.

Ask trick-or-treaters or people at a Halloween party if they have been green today and ask them to explain how. For those that answer “yes,” treat them with a candy. For those that answer “no,” write them up a warning and give them a candy – but tell them they better smarten by next year!

Go as a Green Superhero for Halloween

Check out a secondhand store for a superhero outfit in green, or make the outfit at home by wearing a green shirt, green leggings and big belt for around the waist. A green cape can easily be made with a green tablecloth or a large swatch of green fabric bought from a fabric shop. Make up a fun name like “Captain Green” or “Planet Protector.” Paint a letter in the centre of the shirt to match the name by either using fabric paint or painter’s tape.

The superhero can talk about his or her exploits to save the world from using rechargeable batteries to walking to the Halloween party tonight instead of driving.

Dress Up as Mother Nature for Halloween

For a Mother Nature outfit, wear a flowing white dress and a garland of leaves and flowers for the hair. To show that Mother Nature has not been treated as she should, the person can wear a sling or go around with crutches. Then when people ask about the “injury” – Mother Nature can say, “People haven’t been treating me as well as they should be!”

Here are a few green ideas for Halloween, dress up as the Ghost of Halloween Garbage, a green fairy, an Official Recycling Officer, a green superhero or Mother Nature in distress.
