Picking out the perfect Halloween costume for couples doesn't have to be hard. The more creativity that goes into ideas, the more fun the celebration will be.

Come Halloween, lots of people get excited to put on costumes and go trick or treating or out to parties. Finding the perfect costume can be a challenge, but with the right significant other or friend, it can also be fun. Couples’ costumes can be kitschy, cute, scary or a myriad of other things, but the most important part is finding a costume that expresses both partners’ individuality and will allow everyone to enjoy themselves.

Incorporating the Significant Other’s Personality

If one person is a Star Trek fan and the other only watches movies from the ‘40s, that consideration needs to be made when planning a costume idea for two. Finding a way to compromise or going for something completely off-the-wall that both parties can agree to is the best solution. If both parties are in agreement on what the general idea of the costume is, there are still plenty of ways to let personalities shine through.

Couples’ Costumes from Movies

Going as movie characters is simple, classic and can be inexpensive. Making a low-budget costume isn’t difficult to do with a bit of planning and know-how, although sometimes a store-bought set can be easiest. Picking characters from movies will depend on the taste of each person, and figuring out who gets to go as what can be the most interesting part of the planning.

  • Princess Leia and Han Solo make a great pair for Halloween costumes. There are numerous style to choose from for Leia’s outfits and any fan of Star Wars would enjoy spending a night piloting the Millennium Falcon.
  • Classic movie couples could be Holly Golightly and Paul Varjak from Breakfast at Tiffany’s or Rick and Ilsa from Casablanca. Classic movies had simple but elegant costumes, and these are perfect for couples on a budget.
  • A kitschy way to switch up the traditional romantic couples’ costumes would be to go as Frankenstein and his monster. These costumes would be simple to make and act as a sure-fire conversation starter at parties.

Literary and Historical Costumes

For couples who like to read, are history buffs or are just looking for some interesting characters to model costumes after, going as a literary or historical figure can be an entertaining option.

  • Classic children’s book characters are always a good option. The Cat in the Hat and Things 1 or 2, Alice in Wonderland and the white rabbit or monsters and Max from Where the Wild Things Are would all make slightly kitschy, amusing costumes for two. This could also be modified to make a group costume simply by incorporating more characters.
  • Few women can resist the old fashioned charm of Fitzwilliam Darcy, and Elizabeth Bennett is an elegant, spunky character. Couples who spend Halloween as this famous pair are sure to have a good time.
  • Cleopatra and Marc Antony, the ruling couple, offer a wealth of simple but captivating costume ideas for couples. Dressing up as the ancient pair is an easy way to find a costume that’s sure to please just about everyone.

Quick Ideas for Couples

When planning a costume idea for two, sometimes it’s easier not to go as a specific pair of people. While making costumes based on favorite books or movies can be a fun challenge, it can be a lot easier to settle on a general idea and design or a buy a costume from that. Classic ideas include

  • Pirates. Going as a buccaneer and wench is an easily designed look and will be fun for everyone who doesn’t have to walk the plank.
  • Caveman and cavewoman. A simple animal print outfit will do for this costume, and both partners will have an excuse to point and grunt.
  • Going out on Halloween as a devil and an angel can be a fun way for each partner to show off their best good or bad side.

There are numerous ways for couples to make a shared costume easy, inexpensive and lots of fun for both individuals. Finding a shared interest, a humorous concept or a favorite pair of characters on which to base a couple’s costume is the first step in planning to make Halloween one of the best nights of the year.
