Halloween Party Idea: Monster's Masquerade

Spooky Transformations Beneath a Full Moon!

Aug 31, 2009 Jan Peterson

A Monster's Masquerade is a Halloween party perfect for serious party types who enjoy emersing themselves into their chosen scary Halloween character.

For the Monsters' Masquerade, each party guest needs to take their costume beyond funny or scary to a complete disguise, hoping to fool the most people at the party of their real identity. This will usually require wigs, full makeup and masks, body altering padding and a creative way to communicate.

Monster Masquerade Guide

Throwing a Monster’s Masquerade incorporates all of the typical Halloween party planning. The party needs inventive food stuff, howling good music and cobwebs everywhere! The additional component of this party is that everyone’s identity stays completely secret during the beginning of the party.

At the start, the host or hostess is the only person who may know their guests identities, and, of course, everyone knows who the hosts are. Outside of this knowledge, the rest of the guests will need to be crafty to keep their identities secret, especially if they are attending a party with close friends.

As guests arrive, each monster will be logged in. For the first hour or two, guests will mingle and try to figure out who is inside that costume. Once a set amount of time is up, all guests will write their guess as to the person inside each of the Monster costumes on a piece of paper, fold it up and drop it into a voting jar. The person who can fool the most people wins the top costume award!

Monster Costume Ideas

There are many costumes that naturally hide the person underneath by covering the face, much of the body or using lots of theatrical makeup. As well, there are costumes for most horror movie characters, perfect for a complete cover up. Here is a list of some monster character ideas, many of which are fairly easy to come by:

  • Ghoul
  • Witch
  • Robot
  • Alien
  • Freddie Krueger
  • King Kong
  • The Blob
  • Clown (Remember the Movie “It”?)
  • Frankenstein
  • Dracula
  • Mummy
  • Ghost
  • Zombie
  • Skeleton
  • Headless Horseman
  • Pumpkin Head
  • Werewolf

Halloween Wigs and Masks

In addition to the costume, Halloween Monster partygoers will need to think about what other body or facial characteristics may give them away. They can find great wigs at costume stores, or change their hair color with spray hair paint or gel. One such online resource is buycostumes.com, which carry wigs perfect to create a good Vampire or Elvira, Bride of Frankenstein, Beetlejuice, or even Batman’s arch enemy, the Joker. Costumes4 Less.com has glow in the dark hair gel that doesn’t even require a black light (Iglow Hair Gel).

Also, there are some pretty scary Monster masks made of latex that completely disguises the person beneath. They can run anywhere from $10.00 to $50.00. The latex masks can get hot to wear, and are definitely an obstruction to good vision, but wonderful for hiding someone’s identity.

Assuming a New Halloween Monster Voice

One of the hardest things to disguise is someone’s voice. Most friends can ID their friends fairly easily this way. Here are some ways to handle this issue:

Communicate only in writing - Carry a pad and pencil

Use a noisemaker - Click or crank to signal yes and no

Use a voice changer - Several voice changers are available on Amazon.com, including the Multi Voice Changer by Toysmith, or Smartlab’s Voice Changer, both offering different voice sounds such as scary, squeaky, and robotic.

Other disquise techniques are to pad or stuff clothing, wear gloves, change gender roles in the costume or use theatrical makeup.

Final Tips for Halloween Monster Masquerade

Some giveaways that might be overlooked:

  • Sly monsters will realize that friends will recognize their cars or purses!
  • Choice of alcohol may be a dead giveaway.
  • Dancing can be another personal talent (or not) easily recognized.

Once true identities have been revealed, everyone can take off their masks and go back to being themselves. Different awards can be given, such as “Best Costume”, Scariest Monster”, and “Best Disguised Monster.

Before the masks come off, however, the host needs to make sure ample pictures have been taken, for the pictures of all the Monsters who attended the Masquerade will be priceless memories for years to come!
