William Glen is wonderful any time of the year, but even more so at Christmas time. When you walk into the main store, you will see Christmas in every corner of every room. There are dozens of themed Christmas trees covered in ornaments. You can barely move through the store because of all the holiday decorations, but once you get past them you can enjoy their every-day offerings of china, crystal, silver and house wares.
When you have finally made your way through the whole main store, go out the back door and across the parking lot to the William Glen Christmas store. Once again, you will find yourself surrounded by Christmas. Tree ornaments of every type and Christmas village pieces (Halloween, too) pack the store. If you love opulence, William Glen is the place to get it. Do not let this deter you, though; their prices are quite affordable.
Macy's

There are a number of Macy’s scattered throughout the Sacramento area. While I generally prefer to shop at family-owned stores, Macy's is a Christmas tradition and a fabulous place to shop for holiday decorations. During the Christmas season, every store devotes an entire section to Christmas. Walking in to one of these is like walking in a Winter Wonderland, including a forest of themed decorated trees and hundreds of Christmas tree ornaments to choose from.

Take a short trip to Dorthea's, a year-round Christmas store at 801 Sutter Street in Folsom. There are a few things for each holiday, but Christmas is Dorthea’s main focus. There are so many different Christmas tree ornaments, you should be able to find one for any taste or collector. Wander through the various rooms and peek at the Christmas villages. Red Hat Society members will find a section just for them.
Apple Hill

For crafty Christmas and Halloween decorations, delicious baked goods, and hours of family fun, you cannot beat Apple Hill. Apple Hill is a large area in the mountains right above Placerville, and many families and schools take field trips there for shopping, treat tasting and Christmas tree hunting. There are farms scattered all over the mountain that host all kinds of farm-fresh produce, craft vendors and activities for the kids, so check the website and plan your excursions for the day. The author's family enjoys Able's Apple Acres, High Hill and El Dorado Orchards, and Kids, Inc. is very popular.

Save money by shopping for holiday decorations at Cosco and Sam's Club. They have a lot of very nice holiday decorations at reasonable prices. These places are really good for strings of lights, big blow-up displays and lighted sculptures, as well as better-than-average ornaments and wrapping paper. Along the same lines, Rite Aid sells a wide variety of decorations at affordable prices, and some stores are open every day of the year for last-minute gifts and stocking stuffers. Go in on Christmas Day to stock up on decorations for next year at an even deeper discount.
