Dressing up for Halloween is fun and simple using basic clothing and accessories embellished with a few creative accents.

Choosing a Halloween costume is always a lot of fun. Kids look forward to the chance to morph into someone – or something – else for a night of tricks and treats. Sometimes, though, the fun of dressing up is diminished by the quality and price of costumes found in stores. If store-bought options are unacceptable, then try one of these five ideas for homemade Halloween costumes for kids. They are easy, inexpensive and classic costumes kids are sure to love.

Superhero Halloween Costume for Kids

Whether it’s Superman, Wonderwoman or Mr. Incredible, dressing as a superhero for Halloween is something most kids do at least once. So, it’s great to know that pulling together a superhero costume is easy to do with items already in the closet.

  • Wear tights and leotards or swimsuits.
  • Use iron-on appliqués or fabric paint to create a logo on a pillowcase-turned-cape.
  • Complete the costume with rain boots or other tall shoes.

Kids Chef Costume for Halloween

Cooking shows are popular on TV, so much so that many of the chefs become like celebrities. Children who like to imitate these real-life characters will love playing chef for a night. Dress them up with these tips for a top chef kids Halloween costume both boys and girls can wear.

  • Wear a kid-size apron over a simple shirt and pants combo.
  • Make a chef’s hat out of white poster board and paper.
  • Use a plastic mixing bowl in place of a treat bag.

Girl’s Ballerina Costume

Many little girls take dance lessons at some point during childhood and probably also have trunks full of pretty dress up clothes. Take advantage of these resources already available to create a beautiful ballerina costume for Halloween.

  • Pair any leotard and tights in matching or coordinating colors.
  • Add ballet flats and a tutu for a true dancer look.
  • Wear hair up in a bun and, if appropriate, apply pretty makeup.

Pirate Halloween Costume for Boys

Argh! Who goes there? A pirate, of course. Another favorite dress up choice for boys, it is also really easy to put together if you look for the right pieces of clothing. Keep in mind a color scheme of black, white and red, and almost anything can look like a pirate.

  • Start with too-small black pants (cut them short if needed), and a plain white t-shirt.
  • Add a piece of striped fabric as a belt. An old tie works well.
  • Complete the look with accessories – an eye patch, gold chains and stuffed bird.

Homemade Animal Costumes for Boys and Girls

They’re cute, they’re furry and they make adorable Halloween costumes for babies and toddlers. There are many animals to choose from for a costume. Whether you look to the farm, the jungle or the backyard for ideas, they all start with a basic uniform of a solid-color sweat suit. Here’s a list of animals to create just by adding a few embellishments:

  • Cat
  • Cow
  • Pig
  • Dog
  • Monkey
  • Lion

Dressing kids in Halloween costumes shouldn’t cost a lot of money and it should be fun. Consider homemade Halloween costumes, which bring a special touch to dressing up.
