Use these ideas for homemade superhero costumes that any boy or girl will love to show off.

Ask any child what he or she wants to dress up as for Halloween, and there is a good chance a superhero will be the answer. Superman, Batman, Catwoman and even the Incredibles are iconic characters prevalent throughout childhood. All boys and girls should go as a superhero for Halloween at least once. Putting together a homemade superhero costume is actually simple and just as effective as expensive, store-bought versions.

Making Superhero Costumes

When watching cartoons or movies about superheroes, it is easy to see the clothing consists of just three or four basic pieces: tight, bodysuit, cape and mask. To create a homemade version for Halloween, determine which pieces the superhero of choice wears, and then use these suggestions to pull the costume together.

  • Both girls and boys can wear tights or leggings.
  • To replicate the bodysuit, try one-piece swimsuits or dance leotards for girls. For boys, use swim trunks and a tight fitting, long-sleeved t-shirt.
  • Use fabric paint or iron-on appliqués to create the superhero logo on the front of the costume.
  • For shoes, rain boots work well because they come in many different colors, but any tall boots will work. If boots are not comfortable, wear socks pulled up high and whatever shoes provide the child with the most comfort.

Superhero Costume Accessories

Getting the accessories right—capes and masks, for example—are key to creating authentic superhero looks. Use these ideas for creative ways to make them.

  • Pillowcases make perfect capes. Simply use fabric paint to create a design, or for a more finished look, have someone embroider an emblem on the pillowcase. Use ribbon stitched to the top of case as ties to go around the shoulders.
  • For superhero masks, raid the seasonal items in your closet. Depending on the superhero in question, ski masks, swim goggles and are all great options. Try out different combinations until one stands out as the most believable. Glue on triangles cut out of felt to ski masks if going as Batman.
  • Other props for superhero costumes might include wearing gloves and belts to add more character.
  • For more realistic looks, consider face paint (for the web on Spiderman’s face), wigs (to pull off Wonderwoman’s long dark hair) or newspaper crumpled up to mimic almost any superhero’s muscles.

Dressing up as superheroes for Halloween will always be a popular choice for kids. With these tips for homemade superhero costumes that are easy and inexpensive, they can dress up as a different character every year.
