Slime, a favorite amongst youth, is a great party favor craft to add to any Halloween Party or children's get-together.

Making slime can be a fun way to create a gooey craft with a few kids or a whole group. At a Halloween Party, invite party goers to be spectators of a mad scientist lab, creating the gooey slime right in front of the guests. If preferred, the mixture can be prepared ahead of time to send home as a party favor. Family Fun Magazine offers this easy concoction with one warning label: be cautious with the product around kids younger than the age of three. Some ingredients can be toxic in large doses, and young children can be more susceptible to reactions.

Ingredients for Homemade Green Slime

To make this oozing mixture, adults will need to have the following ingredients on hand:

  • ¾ cup of warm water and 1 and 1/3 cup of warm water
  • 1 cup of white glue, such as Elmer’s
  • Green food coloring
  • 4 teaspoons borax

How to Make the Slime

  1. In a medium or large size bowl, first mix together ¾ cup of warm water and the glue (1 cup)
  2. Add several drops of the green food coloring to the mixture
  3. Set aside
  4. In a separate large size bowl, mix together the 4 teaspoons of borax and 1/3 cup of warm water
  5. Pour the first bowl of ingredients (glue, food coloring and water) into the second bowl of ingredients (borax and water)
  6. Do not stir, but allow to sit for one full minute instead, allowing the slime to form on its own
  7. After sitting for one minute, lift the firm slime out of the liquid
  8. Divide into pieces, and place into plastic sealable bags before distributing to each child

Tips and Cautions for the Slime

This version of slime is recommended for children over the age of three. Due to the nature of the glue, slime can stick to certain fabrics. According to Family Fun Magazine, placing the slime in plastic baggies can help minimize accidents.

For different themed parties, the color of the slime can be altered by experimenting with various food colorings. For Valentine’s Day, make red slime. For Birthday parties, follow the color scheme of the party, or make various batches in different colors.

Children will have fun oozing this gooey goop through their fingers, perfect for a rainy-day craft or a spooky Halloween party. For decorating tips for Halloween Parties or Haunted Houses, readers may enjoy Decorating Ideas for Halloween.
