Christmas is just around the corner and now is the perfect time to dress up the home. Use these simple and affordable tips to create a festive home.

The best way to get into the Christmas spirit is at the home front. However, economic situations may call for the family to save money, especially when it comes to celebrations. Here are some pointers to consider when decorating the home for the holidays.

Use What's Already There

First, take a look at what's already available at home. If there's a wreath and a set of lights tucked away in the corner of the garage, it doesn't hurt to use them. This will indeed save money on decor.

Shop Smart

Before purchasing new and nifty Christmas lights, shop around by looking through different flyers, including those from hardware stores. Also, make sure to keep all receipts; these will be extremely handy if technical decor occur, such as when the lights do not work when they're brought home.

Swap Decor with Other Families

Get various families from the neighbourhood together and swap Christmas decor. This will not only have the whole block save money on decorations, but also encourage others to reuse items rather than throwing them away.

Reuse Items

Unsure whether or not to choose a fake tree or real tree? Try a fake tree. This can be reused for many years, and this could even turn into a family tradition. Plus, money will not have to be dished out every year for a brand new tree.

Get Crafty

Have the kids make Christmas decorations at home. Acording to Gail Oliver, Suite101 writer of the article "Easy Christmas Ornaments Crafts for Kids,"Find small wooden letters at a craft or dollar store and have the kids paint them in a variety of Christmas colors."

For more ideas, try to use the following materials with the kids:

  • Yarn
  • Glue
  • Gems and glitter
  • Construction paper
  • Googly eyes
  • Scissors

The kids can cut a variety of shapes out of the construction paper and glue on gems, glitter or even googly eyes. Punch a hole into the shapes and string yarn through the hole. Years later, take these decorations out from storage and remind the kids of their younger years.

Overall, decorating the home for the holidays does not have to be expensive at all. The best ways to save money on this domestic hobby are to do your own decorations with the kids, swap old decor with other families, shop around, and, most of all, use what's already available in the home. Also, sometimes simple is the best type of decor; consider using minimal decorations to maintain an open-concept look to the home.
