Use simple ideas for spooky Halloween party decorations to liven up an adult only ghosts and ghouls theme party. Focus on lighting for the right scary ambience.

When the kids are too old for trick or treating, it’s time for an adult only Halloween party. Have fun by asking guests to wear scary Halloween ghost or ghoul costumes and use these ideas for spooky theme party decorations to get everyone in the mood when they arrive.

Whilst it is fun to spend time doing Halloween pumpkin carving, it can be time consuming carving intricate scary faces onto tough pumpkin skin. These lighting decoration ideas offer some cheap, quick and scary alternatives just right for a ghosts and ghouls party.

Halloween Lights Using Paper not Pumpkins

Paper lanterns are cheap to buy in hardware and DIY stores and are perfect for painting on scary faces as seen in the picture below. Pop an orange light bulb inside for a great alternative to the traditional pumpkin. Hang as many as possible for the best effect.

Add more Halloween lights using medium sized paper bags. Draw some suitably scary faces or write something like “witch way” with an arrow to give directions, then half fill them with sand. Place them onto a flat surface, pop an orange tea-light inside and light them as dusk falls for a great spooky glow.

As the right lighting minimizes the number of other decorations required, add as many orange candles as possible plus use Christmas lights in strategic places as “eyes.” Simply remove some of the bulbs and leave sets of two lights that can be placed along a pathway or on top of a bush to give a scary “who’s watching you” feel as guests arrive.

If still short of lights, carve eyes into large green, red or yellow peppers and pop a tea-light inside. These are ideal for bathrooms, adding just a touch of light whilst hiding other scary props like the spiders below.

Fun Spooky Theme Party Decorations

Fake spiders always make a few guests jump so place them in dimly lit areas or underneath the toilet seat! Homemade spiders can be made using pieces of black wool tied together at the ends and attached to a wool pom-pom. The legs will be dangly but that’s exactly the right effect for spooking people when hung from the ceiling!

Make some life-size skeletons by sticking together sheets of black A3 paper end on end to a height of around 5 feet. Paint white, preferably fluorescent, bones onto the paper and place a few skeletons in the main party area for a spooky atmosphere.

Fake blood and body parts always go down well at a ghosts and ghouls party but many products sold at online Halloween stores are simply too gory for many people. One favorite is to fill some thin surgical gloves with water, freeze them, then float the “severed” hands in a bowl of water mixed with a few drops of red food coloring for maximum effect. Alternatively, tie string at the base of the rubber fingers, freeze those instead and simply pop severed fingers into party drinks.

If having an outdoor Halloween party, make some gravestones by cutting old pieces of wood and placing them in a box filled with sand or soil. Use a marker pen or paint to add some amusing names like “Mike Offin” or “Ima Kreip.”

Ghost and Ghoul Halloween Costumes
