Pop Culture Halloween Costumes for Adults

Dress Up as a Popular Celebrity this October 31st

Oct 2, 2009 Lauren Flanagan

It's been quite a year in the world of pop culture, and that means there are a lot of great ideas for amusing Halloween costumes.

Coming up with a clever Halloween costume is a struggle every year. While everyone wants to be creative and impress their friends, many end up spending more time and money than necessary in the quest. Keep it simple and give people a good laugh by taking a cue from some of the top celebrity and news stories of the year.

Popular Halloween Costumes for Women

  • Lady Gaga: Feeling eccentric? A Lady Gaga costume might be in order. Don your flashiest unitard and most decorative teacups for a…unique costume this year.
  • Farrah Fawcett: What better way to pay tribute to the 1970s icon than with a blond feathered wig and some flashy bellbottoms?
  • Sarah Palin: No one can do it as well as Tina Fey, but for those who want to try, it shouldn't be too hard. Glasses, appropriately styled brown hair, and a structured jacket should do it.
  • OctoMom: To create a Nadya Suleman costume all that's needed is a long black wig and some lip-liner to create wide, pouty lips. Don't try to carry 14 dolls around. You'll get exhausted.

Funny Halloween Costumes for Men

  • The Hangover's Zach Galifianakis: Pay tribute to one of the funniest movies of the year by dressing up as Zach Galifianakis from The Hangover. T-shirt, khakis, and a baby strapped to your chest should do it. Don't forget the beard and moustache.
  • Patrick Swayze: Depending where you live it might be a little chilly to do the Point Break look, but relive the Johnny Castle style from Dirty Dancing with some snazzy black tuxedo pants (tight of course) and an open white dress shirt.
  • Michael Jackson: It's a pretty safe bet that there will be a lot of Michael Jackson's running around this October 31st. The question is which Michael will it be? Sparkly glove and socks Michael, Beat It Michael, Bad Michael, or the slightly more complicated Thriller Michael?
  • Bruno: Oh the possibilities. Transparent vinyl, lederhosen, leather vests: all it requires is a little imagination and a lot of chutzpah.

Pop Culture Halloween Costumes For Couples

  • Jon and Kate Gosselin: Oh that hair. While it may have garnered Kate Gosselin some good-natured ribbing this year, it's also going to make wig-makers a fortune. Experts expect the Kate Gosselin wig to be one of the top sellers this Halloween. Easily make it a couples costume by having the male half dress as Jon Gosselin. All it takes is an Ed Hardy shirt and a self-satisfied smirk.
  • Kanye West and Taylor Swift: When Kanye West made his little faux pas at the 2009 MTV Awards he probably didn't know that he was setting the stage for an awesome couple's Halloween costume. Girls, all you need is a cute dress, a Rapunzel wig, and an adorable smile. Guys, an uber-trendy outfit and an ego so large your head won't fit through the door.

They might not be scary, but the above costumes will surely impress this year's partygoers. Dressing like popular celebrities is a great way to have fun and be creative. And surely they don't mind. After all, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, right?
