Why spend money on expensive trick-or-treat bags? You can \make your own by recycling cereal or other cardboard food produce boxes you may have around the house.

To embellish the boxes, all you will need are some Halloween-theme leftover wrapping paper or magazines. If you don’t have any magazines or Halloween-theme wrapping paper, get the kids to make some spooky drawings that you can use instead. Then before you can say "Trick or treat," you and the kids will have created original and unique treat boxes everyone else will envy.

If you have no kids but are planning an adults Halloween party, why not delight your guests with trick or treat containers filled with goodies that they can take home at the end of the evening? For these containers, you can use slightly more sophisticated wrapping paper but don’t go to a lot of trouble.

For a few dollars you can buy attractive paper at your local paper shop or dollar store. And instead of cereal boxes, use cardboard coffee cans or similar containers. All you need to do is measure and cut the paper to the same height at the can. Then you can wrap and glue the paper around the can, add a handle, and fill with goodies.

Kids’ Trick-or-Treat Boxes

What You Will Need

  • Cereal or any cardboard food produce box such as popcorn, etc.)
  • Magazines with Halloween theme or leftover wrapping paper
  • Scissors
  • Hole punch
  • Glue stick
  • Scotch tape
  • Pipe cleaners or thin wire (for handles)

How to Do It

  1. If you are using leftover wrapping paper, measure your box and cut out the appropriate size from your wrapping paper. You can do the same with your kids’ drawings if you are using those. Set aside.
  2. If you are using magazine pages, go through your pile of old magazines and tear out any pages that have a Halloween theme or look. Note: Depending on the size of the box, one magazine page will cover about one front and side of the box. So you will need at least two pages for each box.
  3. Cut off the tops of the cereal boxes or you can tuck these inside the box and glue down to add stability to the box.
  4. Wrap and glue the magazine pages so the whole box is covered. Don’t worry if you have to use more than one or two pages around the box.
  5. Tuck in any surplus paper at the top and fold the surplus at the bottom and glue or tape down.
  6. Punch in holes (for the handle) in the sides of the box and then add a wire or pipe cleaner handle.
  7. Fill the box with treats and watch them disappear!
