The economy is tight and so are a lot of people's budgets. But that doesn't mean Valentine's Day should slip by without notice.

For the truly romantic, Valentine’s Day is special. For anyone in a relationship it is imperative. Acknowledging and celebrating Valentine’s Day tells a significant other that they are cherished and appreciated.

Yes, Valentine’s Day is scorned by many (mostly those not in love) and can be looked upon as just another commercial holiday meant to deplete the finances of the average person. However, those who have been struck by Cupid’s bow know better than to kick February 14 to the curb.

So for those Valentines who are currently financially challenged, consider these thrifty suggestions for making Valentine’s Day romantic and special.

Enjoy Dinner and a Movie

If money is really tight and because it is Valentine’s Day there are bound to be plenty of romantic movies on television. However, the local movie rental store might be a better bet.

Here the true romantic can find plenty of romantic comedies and sappy tear jerkers to choose from, though some might want to rethink this move and consider their significant other’s preferences. That may mean renting Caddyshack or The Dirty Dozen not because of their tie-in to Valentine’s Day, but because they are on a lover’s top ten favorite movies list.

As for dinner, as long as it is served by candlelight, there is a lot of room to be flexible. While a nice home-cooked meal with a fancy dessert is always appropriate, take-out from that favorite restaurant will do just fine.

Give a Spa Treatment

What man or woman wouldn’t want to be pampered with a day at the spa? Of course, most spa treatments will really pinch the pocket book. Instead, make it an at-home spa treatment.

There are so many fun items that anyone can purchase at the local specialty or drug store, including bathing accessories, aromas, essential oils, and creams. Giving your significant other a romantic bath for two followed up by a manicure, pedicure with foot massage, and/or back massage can make this Valentine’s Day extra special. And don’t forget to make the mood even more romantic with candles in that special someone’s favorite fragrance along with a CD of love songs.

Say it With Music and Flowers

Speaking of love songs, why not create a personalized CD with romantic favorites for that special someone. Or for those who have been gifted with great pipes, consider delivering the message personally in song either in the form of a CD or live on Valentine’s Day.

Pairing the music with a nice inexpensive, yet beautiful bouquet of flowers (yes, they are still a great gift for that special someone) or even a single rose can say so much. Great bouquets can be found at the local grocery store or florist, though handpicking them from the garden can say a lot, too.

Share Wine, Words and Art

For those Valentines who are also wordsmiths or artistic geniuses, consider writing a poem, creating a Valentine’s Day card, putting together a photo collage or making a photo album. Anyone feeling limited by their creativity, might want to share a book of poetry or art with their loved one. Pick one up at the local book store or if money is really tight, check out the library.

It’s important to pair these readings and viewings with a nice bottle of champagne, sparking wine or regular wine. Or, if that’s not practical, try a bottle of sparking apple cider.

Just Snuggle

What a better way to start the day then being served breakfast in bed. Valentine’s Day is on Saturday this year after all. And while eggs Benedict might not top the menu, any effort will surely be rewarded with hugs and kisses. A little champagne in the orange juice for a mimosa and the day can only get better from there.

For those romantics who don't have other distractions – children, housework – spending the day in bed just snuggling with that special loved one can make for the perfect Valentine's Day treat.

The whole idea is not to run out and spend lots of money on chocolate heart candy and huggable stuffed animals, but to share the love in easy, simple ways. Something true romantics do every day, anyway.
