Special effects products provide the finishing touches to a spooky Halloween character, which, with care and the proper materials, can work together with the Halloween costume, props, wigs and other Halloween accessories to create a more effective look.
Before Applying the Halloween Face Paint and FX Special Effects
When using special effects for kid’s Halloween parties, the following should be borne in mind:
- Perform a practice run in advance of the Halloween party to get to know the materials and perfect a technique
- Allow plenty of time before the Halloween party to apply the special effects face paint
- Avoid obscure brands when purchasing special effects makeup. Snazaroo is a well-established producer of face paint and special effects that is free from toxins, perfumes and is suitable for sensitive skin. If the child has a suspected skin condition, however, it is best to do an allergy test
- Use clean materials
- Care must be taken with applying make up near the eyes
- Ensure there is adequate choice of face paint designs available, including vampires, skulls, witches and werewolves.
- Designate a quiet area to apply the special effects makeup
Face Painting Tips
Face paint and special effects makeup for ghosts, skulls, witches and cats can be found in most face painting and party accessory suppliers such as Snazaroo, Little Crafty Bugs, Face Painting Designs and Silly Jokes. Special effects are best applied on top of the base paint. Using bold strokes is better than trying to sketch the effect in order to give it a more theatrical look.
Fake Blood
Blood is supplied in various shades and textures: dark for old blood, pale for fresh blood, cake for dried blood, gel, for congealed blood and theatrical for illustration. To complete a Dracula look, theatre blood can be drawn around the mouth area and chin via a fine brush to suggest the aftermath of a feast. Cake blood is ideal for suggesting dried blood around a wound. Gel blood is great for suggesting deep cuts and blood dribbles.
Recreating Frankenstein’s Scar & Other Cuts with FX Special Effects
Moulding wax, cake blood, gel blood and a little black paint is required for this look.
- Roll out a teaspoon sized blob of moulding wax into a sausage shape
- Place the wax onto the desired part of the face or hand
- With a spatula, soften the edges down until the wax forms a ridge
- Apply a little base paint to blend the colour of the scar with the rest of the face paint
- With the edge of the spatula, slice through the centre of the moulding wax, forming a trough
- Stipple a little cake blood over the area
- Apply gel blood into the trough to give it a congealed effect
- If desired, painting thin black lines across the trough will suggest stitches
Witch’s Warts & Other Grotesque Features
To add something extra, the moulding wax can be used to add a grotesque feature such as a wart. Just roll the wax into a ball shape. Gently press onto the face and blend the edges to the skin. Apply the green witch’s base paint to give it an even colour. Stipple a paler green colour over the wart itself to make it stand out. Illustrate stubble with brown paint via a fine brush. Fake skin for peeling effects can be sought from Fake Latex skin from Silly Jokes (note, not for under 10s). Fake skin can be used to suggest other skin abnormalities.
Halloween Face Painting Ideas and Special Effects
Halloween parties can be given a more ghoulish feel with carefully applied special effects makeup on top of Halloween face paint. Fake blood, moulding wax and latex skin will come in handy for creating Frankenstein, Dracula, Witches and other monsters for fun Halloween games. For real frights, fake body parts, such as Vampire's fangs and dismembered limbs will create a Halloween party to remember.
