A Thanksgiving movie is a great way to peacefully bring the family together and enjoy the holidays. Here's a list of Thanksgiving movies to choose from.

Watching a Thanksgiving movie is a great way to relax with family, keep the kids busy, or kill time until the turkey is ready. However, finding the right movie for Thanksgiving is sometimes a struggle. Many people can name several Christmas movies off the top of their heads, fewer could do the same for Thanksgiving. Here are a few ideas to get the ball rolling.

Thanksgiving Movies for Families with Children

  • A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving (1973): Enjoy the nostalgia while sharing this classic Thanksgiving movie with the kids. Snoopy creates an interesting Thanksgiving dinner for Peppermint Patty and friends when Charlie Brown goes to his Grandmother’s. (Runs 30 minutes)
  • Mouse on the Mayflower (1968): William the Mouse tells his story of traveling to the new world on the Mayflower and the struggles he deals with upon arriving. A great way to teach the kids the Thanksgiving story, this movie may be hard to find on DVD. (Runs 48 minutes)
  • Pocahontas (1995): Although Disney’s Pocahontas has been critiqued for its historical accuracy this movie will surely get the kids interested in learning more. Although the story of Pocahontas takes place before that of the Pilgrims – this Thanksgiving movie makes for a good segue into a history lesson. (Runs 84 minutes)

Thanksgiving Movies About Dysfunctional Families

  • Home for the Holidays (1995): Directed by Jodie Foster this movie tells the story of Claudia Larson’s holiday visit home to a constantly bickering family. An excellent Thanksgiving movie, Roger Ebert gives it 3.5/4 stars. (Runs 103 minutes)
  • Hannah and Her Sisters (1986): This Thanksgiving movie from Woody Allen tells the story of three sisters that fall in love with each other’s husbands. It takes place between two Thanksgivings amidst great family dysfunctionality. (Runs 103 minutes)
  • Pieces of April (2003): April, played by Katie Holmes, invites her family to have Thanksgiving dinner in her tiny New York apartment. However, April’s oven breaks and she must find someone in her building to help. (Runs 80 minutes)
  • What’s Cooking (2000): This Thanksgiving movie tells the story of four different families preparing their Turkey dinner. The families are African-American, Jewish, Latino, and Vietnamese. Each has their own issues to deal with. (Runs 109 minutes)
  • Planes, Trains, and Automobiles (1987): Steve Martin and John Candy create lots of laughs in this heartwarmingly funny movie about a man trying to get home despite frustrating airport delays. This could be a good movie for the family – though Steve Martin does have one F-word fill tirade. (Runs 93 minutes)
