The third day of Christmas, according to the song, has someone sending a gift of three French hens. Why not host a dinner or party based on France or chicken?

The third day of Christmas is the day after Boxing Day. According to the song "The Twelve Days of Christmas", the gift associated with this day was three French hens. The BBC website offers the information that there are four well known breeds of French hen – the Faverolles, Marans, Crevecoeurs and La Fleche. However, unless being really purist, these can be substituted for any old breed of chicken when cooking for this day.

Host a French or Clothes Party

Theme party décor around the colours of the French flag – blue, red and white. Serve French onion soup, pâté de fois gras, chocolate truffles or the real thing if feeling rich or frogs’ legs if feeling brave. Champagne, burgundy or chartreuse would be suitable drinks to serve. Play music by Edith Piaf or Charles Aznavour and consider showing a film in which the actor Gérard Depardieu stars such as Green Card or Bogus.

Alternatively, as the French are renowned for their fashion, why not host a clothes swap party where guests bring along any clothes or accessories such as handbags or shoes that they no longer want. Everyone will have great fun trying on different things out and swapping unwanted items for something different. Serve champagne and cheeses such as camembert and brie with chunks of French bread or baguettes.

Recipe for Chicken Thighs in Honey and Dijon Mustard Glaze

Chicken chasseur is a popular French dinner dish and can be made using any type of fowl. Coq au vin and tarragon chicken are also dishes associated with this European country. The following recipe is not only delicious, but quick and economical to make and makes the most of Dijon mustard.

Ingredients (serves 4):

  • 8 chicken thighs
  • 4 tbsp Dijon mustard
  • 4 tbsp runny honey
  • Salt and pepper

Method:

  1. Mix the honey and mustard together and season to taste
  2. Brush the honey and mustard mixture all over the chicken thighs
  3. Lay the thighs out on a baking tray
  4. Pop into a preheated oven on gas mark 5, 190 C, 375 F and bake for half an hour or so, basting occasionally, until they are cooked enough so that the juices run clear.
  5. Serve hot or cold with a green salad and jacket (baked) or boiled new potatoes
