The right tools make the task of pumpkin carving easy; it doesn't matter if they weren't created with pumpkins and gourds in mind. Think further than the ordinary kitchen knife and spoon. A look around your house will yield objects that you can use for pumpkin carving: saws and gouges from the tool box are great for cutting and scraping, melon ballers from the kitchen drawers can be useful in cleaning out the pumpkin. Here are a few tools that are practically essential for achieving great results (see photo below--the descriptions follow the tools from left to right.)
Used frequently by potters, the needle tool effectively transfers template designs from paper to pumpkin.
To create stripes in the skin of a pumpkin, use a wood gouge to pare away the shell and expose the flesh underneath.
Carve spheres out of the skin of a pumpkin with a melon baller.
This saw is more efficient and safer than a kitchen knife when you're carving a pumpkin. The saw's serrated teeth can slice through a pumpkin's hard shell to cut a hole for hollowing or to make curved cuts when creating a design. This tool works especially well on pumpkins with hard skins or with tough-shelled gourds.
Use this tool to help remove the fibrous "innards" of the pumpkin.
This tool also works great for cleaning out a pumpkin; you can quickly scoop the fibers and seeds away from the interior of the pumpkin.
Use this saw to carve irregular shapes and designs.
These short metal tools with a rounded end come in several sizes. Small round-hole cutters work well for creating holes or other detailed designs into pumpkin skins.
Use this tool to carve fine details into the surface of a pumpkin.
Touch up your design by refining rough edges or carving in tight spots with this sharp, exact tool. The chip carving knife can cut perfect, curvy lines for a leering grin and works well for special effects, such as paring down round eyes on a pumpkin so the thin yellow flesh glows when you add the light source.
These knives are sold in various sizes and can be fitted with different-sized blades; the knives are extremely useful when cutting designs into thin-skinned pumpkins.
The set of tools found in wood-carving sets also make great tools for pumpkin carving. You can create myriad designs and embellishments with some of the various tools included in a set (check hardware stores and craft stores for the wood-carving tools).
