Spike Jonze's Where The Wild Things Are movie has spurred interest from both kids and adults in dressing up like a character from Where The Wild Things Are. The Maurice Sendak classic children's book adapted by Jonze for the silver screen and beloved by generations, features several different Wild Things all with various furry and feathery countenances.

It can be hard to find a Wild Thing monster costume in stores, but for folks who are up to the crafting challenge a homemade Where The Wild Things Are Halloween costume can beat a store-bought mass-produced Halloween costume hands down. There are also handcrafted versions of the Where The Wild Things Are monster costumes and Max's wolf suit available for purchase online for those who prefer to buy rather than make their own.

How to Make a Where The Wild Things Are Costume

There are some really amazing homemade Where The Wild Things Are Costumes out there. A costume-maker in the Craftster Community posted an online tutorial on her personal blog for the incredible four different Wild Thing masks she made for Halloween. TutuToday has another pictorial tutorial on making your own Wild Thing monster costume. This tutorial is for the striped sweater monster also known as Moishe in Sendak's opera of Where The Wild Things Are and alternately as Carol in the Spike Jonze film. The tutorial advises on how to construct a paper mache head with bulging yellow eyes, sharp white teeth, and pointed horns and also how to make the striped fuzzy shirt with Wild Thing claws.

On the same site directions for making Max's wolf suit can also be found. They use a white fleece to construct Max's union suit and sew in black pipe cleaners for whiskers on the hood. Wire reinforced ears are sewn to the top of the hood. A fuzzy gray wolf tail completes the look.

Though they can be tough to find there are a few versions of Where The Wild Things Are costumes available for purchase online. A search on eBay yields several handcrafted versions of Max's wolf suit and also a handmade striped sweater wild thing (Moishe/Carol) with fuzzy head piece and stuffed white horns. Kids will enjoy gnashing their own terrible teeth while wearing this one.

Several handcrafted Wild Things are also available on Etsy. A search on "where the wild things are" turns up a number of Max wolf suits, a few Wild Thing monster costumes, and a lovely assortment of other art items like Where The Wild Things Are prints, posters, and t-shirts and pendants.
